Welcome to Quilting Oneness

MariaHi, I’m Maria, and I’m happy to be a textile addict 🙂

I started teaching Arts & Crafts in the late 1980’s, and this blog is my way of connecting with a larger circle of people who share this passion already, or who just want to dip their toe in a new experience.

Although the idea of doing something like this has been at the back of my mind for years, it’s a rather spontaneous decision to actually DO IT – and pretty scary, too, because it takes me way out of my comfort zone. There are so many new things to learn, starting with how to best present the content online, how to make a video, and so on.

But I’ll never find out what it’s like unless I stop running in circles {dizzy}, embrace imperfection, mistakes and the fear of the unknown {shivering}, and actually do it {open my eyes and jump}.

The other reason it took me so long to get started was simply that I couldn’t decide what to focus on. Since the beginning of this year, though, my interest has gone back to patchwork and quilting (this time not just by hand but including a simple sewing machine, and I’m learning Thread Sketching and Free Motion Quilting – talking about scary…).

But yet another Patchwork and Quilting Blog?

There are so many wonderful and amazing sites and helpful tutorials on the internet, what could I add?

Then, only ten days ago, the words “my way” popped into my mind.

“My way? What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked my Self.

“That’s easy,” my Self answered. “What else in your life are you interested in? What else is important to you? What do patchwork and quilting stand for? Connect the dots and you got it.” (My Self actually snickered at this point, probably remembering my first attempts at sewing as a child, when one of my grandmothers made “surprise cards” for me, hoping to somehow get me interested in needlework…)

I connected the dots and I got

Quilting Oneness

…or: What patchwork and quilting mean to me

The dots in detail:

Patchwork: Unity in Diversity – each tiny piece is just as valuable as any of the others, exactly right as it is and where it is, contributing to the greater picture
Quilting: Usefulness – uniting different layers, each with their own purpose and individual properties, in order to create something essentially suitable for what it’s meant to do
Surface Design & Embellishments: Beauty and Unique Self-Expression – going beyond utilitarian thinking by investing an extra dose of love and dedication
Resourcefulness & Sustainability: Improvisation and Repurposing – using what is there right now; accepting limitations as a Creativity Challenge; elevating from an attitude of lack to an abundance mindset, from “I can’t because…” to “I can because…”
Communication & Sharing: Fun, Supportive Get-Togethers – Quilting Bees, Community Projects, Charity Quilts, …
Imagination & Co-Creation: Letting Sparks Flow and Bounce – seeding ideas, germinating, watering, fertilizing, caring for them, admiring, harvesting, celebrating together

That’s what I want to do with this blog? That sure is “reaching for the stars”… And where do I start, please?

… one star at a time …
… a small star …
… a hexagon …
… a Hexalong {light-bulb moment}

{big smile}

I hope you’ll enjoy this adventure as much as I do 🙂
